Are you seeking a position in medical billing and coding? Positioning yourself for success starts with your resume. Your resume is your first impression with a prospective employer, so it’s important to highlight your relevant experience, skills and qualifications. A great resume can give you a competitive edge.

Here are six resume tips to help you land your dream medical billing and coding job.

Feature Certifications

To earn a position in medical billing and coding, you’ll need to obtain certifications from the Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). You can feature certifications in the education portion of your resume.

Pick the Right Resume Style

There are three types of resume styles. A functional resume focuses on skills, experience and qualifications in no specific order. A chronological resume lists education and work history in date order, showing the most recent experience first. A combination resume lists skills, qualifications and abilities first, then features a short chronological overview of work and education history.

A functional resume makes sense if you’re new to the field, and don’t have relevant work history to showcase. A combination resume makes sense if you have some experience, but not enough relevant experience. A chronological resume style will work best if you have a lot of relevant experience to highlight.

Feature Tech Skills

Today’s employers want to know about your software and technical skills. It’s important to include software that you’ve worked on, and any data entry tools. Look to the job description for any specific software or tools the position may require.

It’s okay if you don’t have experience with certain tools. Many employers provide training. If you find that a certain software is common throughout the industry it may be wise to take a class. Learning the software could increase your chances of getting hired, and even improve your offer.

Keep it Simple

There are certain professions where resumes require more design, but companies in the healthcare field are looking to hire professionals. Your prospective employer isn’t looking for design skills. Don’t confuse them with fancy hard-to-read fonts or distract them with images.

Use a basic font and size. Make sure your resume is easy to read. Make it easy for the hiring manager to locate your skills and relevant experience.

Include a Cover Letter

A brief cover letter can go a long way in distinguishing you from your competition. The cover letter should explain why you want the job, why you qualify and what you contribute as a team member. The cover letter should be professional, but friendly. Keep it brief and to the point.
